The New Mac Pro – Inspired by a Pringles Can?

At yesterday’s WWDC conference, Apple not only revealed the new version of iOS and the new Macbook Airs, but also unveiled the long awaited Mac Pro revamp. Apple destroyed any speculation of the removal of the Mac Pro line by revealing something many people weren’t expecting. Thats right everyone, the new Mac Pro in an aluminum Pringles can.

OldvsNew-MacPro

Before I go on a rant about why I don’t see this design working out, let me explain to you how I felt when I saw upgraded Mac Pros. I was hoping for new internals, and even though the internals were greatly updated, after seeing the design I was really disappointed. What happened to that timeless aluminum case design? What happened to the effortless drive swaps or video card swaps? All of that was gone, being replaced with the controlling and hard to upgrade Apple redesign.

The Mac Pro, the work horse of the Mac breed, is supposed to be a machine for the VFX guy or graphic designer. Its supposed to be industrial and customizable. Its supposed to give you control over some of the hardware in it. With the new Mac Pro, the only thing you can upgrade is the RAM.

The design. Why? What possessed Apple to make a cylindrical computer? I understand that it may help dissipate heat, and that the internals are more bunched together, but if the cool looking design sacrifices the usability and upgradability of the machine then why bother?

The Mac Pro is about brute force in the content creation world. It’s about being tough and being able to be moved all over. Somehow I don’t see the new design being able to withstand the punishment the previous design could. This redesign is beyond me.
